The technique of "etching" is classified as an indirect technique because the engraving is not done directly by the engraver, rather than by the action of an acid. This acid penetrates the incisions that the artist makes in the varnish through a wax based sheet that covers the metal that is to be engraved.

This technique appeared in Italy and Germany as an alternative to the burin technique and was developed by the Italian goldsmith Maso Finiguerra in 1432. The technique evolves from the armors made by Daniel Hopfer (1470-1536) and his two sons who investigated different decorative possibilities of corrosion of the metals by applying different mordants while protecting other areas with wax to leave them intact.

In the 16th century, etching improved the quality of finishes and quality of details as there was a greater availability and variety of mordants. The artists work with the burin and investigate with the mordant until achieving the chiaroscuro.

Famous artists in this technique were Albrecht Dürer, Lucas Van Leyden, Albert Altdorfer, Hirschvogel, Parmigianino, Jacques Callot, Van Dyck, Rembrant, Francisco Goya, Degás, Manet, Cezanne, Magritte, Pablo Picasso and Miró.
